Happy Friday, Activists!
What a week! We were originally going to ask you to call again to demand the Senate pass the Inflation Reduction Act and then . . . Senate Democrats announced they have consensus on the bill. It looks like it will pass the Senate sometime this weekend. Wow. Just wow. And then it goes to the House, and Speaker Pelosi says they will take it up right away. Check out a summary of much of what's in the bill from this Monday's newsletter here. And there have been more positive developments, so much so that it's hard to imagine we're seeing this. Here are some of them:
After voting for it, and then against it for spite, the Republicans were shamed into voting to pass healthcare for veterans who were injured from burn pits. They managed to look even more terrible than usual in all of this to boot.
Activists in Kansas worked their tails off and voters said hell no to a proposed constitutional amendment on this week's primary ballot that would effectively ban abortions in their state with no exceptions.
You can read a summary of the ins and outs of it all in this great essay by Robert S. McElvaine in Salon. And not to be outdone, here in PA our Supreme Court ruled that our mail-in ballot law is constitutional and will stand. Woo-hoo!
Savor it! Make no mistake - when we tell our Members of Congress that we expect them to vote for legislation to create a livable climate, sensible gun laws, reproductive healthcare access, and more, we're doing so much important work to hold them accountable, which gets us results like we're seeing now. This is why we do it. And when we knock doors to talk to voters, when we call voters, when we write to voters, when we register voters, we're doing the important work to get the right people elected so we'll see more results like these. In the past couple of weeks we've been lucky enough to see some hopeful news. It's the culmination of many hours and days and months of work. Including our work. So savor the moment! And then let's get back into action.
